DHS Announces Extension of Temporary Protected Status for Sudan

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Jeh Johnson has extended the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Sudan for an additional period of 18 months.

The Secretary has determined that due to on-going armed conflict in Sudan, the country is experiencing extraordinary and temporary conditions that prevent its nationals from returning in safety and that permitting such aliens to temporarily remain in the United States is not contrary to U.S. national interests. The 18 month TPS extension for Sudan is effective beginning May 3, 2016 through November 2, 2017.

Nationals of Sudan currently on TPS and who continue meet the eligibility requirements for TPS should submit applications for re-registration to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) during the registration period between January 25, 2016 and March 25, 2016.

Qualifying Sudanese applicants who re-register for the 18 month extension of TPS are also eligible to apply for and receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Sudanese nationals re-registering for TPS should also submit applications for EADs along with their application for TPS re-registration.

Additionally, USCIS has automatically extended the validity of EADs for Sudanese nationals currently on TPS (expiring on May 2, 2016) through November 2, 2016. The automatic extension of these EADs is in recognition of the fact that many TPS re-registrants will not receive approved EAD extensions until after the May 2, 2016 expiration date.
