New Social Media Vetting for H-1B Visa Applicants Starting December 15, 2025
On December 3, 2025, the U.S. Department of State (“DOS”) announced a significant update that will affect all H-1B visa applicants and their dependents. Beginning December 15, 2025, an online presence review will be mandatory for these individuals. This follows the online review process already in place since June 18, 2025, for students and exchange visitors.
What Does This Mean for H-1B Applicants?
If you are an H-1B visa holder or applicant, you need to be aware of these new requirements:
1. Public Social Media Profiles.
As of December 15, 2025, all applicants must set their social media profiles to public. The DOS emphasizes that this is part of their visa screening and vetting process. The goal is to identify individuals who might pose a threat to U.S. national security or public safety.
2. Vetting Process.
The DOS aims to ensure that those applying for admission to the U.S. “do not intend to harm Americans and our national interests.”
3. Consular Officers’ Review.
According to Reuters, consular officers will now review resumes or LinkedIn profiles of H-1B applicants and their family members. They will specifically look for work in areas such as “misinformation, disinformation, content moderation, fact-checking, compliance, and online safety.”
4. Rescheduling of H-1B Visa Interviews Scheduled on or after December 15, 2025.
Many consular posts, including India, Ireland and Vietnam have unilaterally rescheduled certain H-1B and H-4 visa appointments that were originally set for December 2025, and sent applicants notices that they should not appear at their interview as scheduled and instead appear at a later date.

If you are planning to travel outside the United States or are currently abroad and need an H-1B visa, here are some key steps to take:
- Disclose Social Media Handles: Ensure all your social media handles are disclosed and set to public on or after December 15, 2025, or at the time of your application.
- Potential Interview Delays: Be prepared for potential delays in visa processing. Some individuals with interviews scheduled for December 15, 2025, or later have reported cancellations to allow for this online review.
- Consult with an Immigration Attorney: If you have concerns about your online presence, it may be wise to consult with an immigration attorney before traveling or applying for your visa. Altering or removing online information could raise credibility or misrepresentation concerns.
