As we celebrate the Fourth of July, a day that marks the birth of our nation and the principles of liberty, equality, and justice, it is important to pause and reflect not just on what our country was founded upon, but also on the ways in which these values are being tested today.
The Fourth of July is not just a celebration of independence, but a reminder of the very ideals that the United States was built upon: freedom from oppression, the pursuit of happiness, and the right to life, liberty, and the protection of one’s own dignity. These are the principles that were enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, documents that have guided our national identity and continue to resonate with the aspirations of millions.
As we gather this year to celebrate, we must also acknowledge the stark contrast between the historical narrative of our nation and the current reality faced by millions of noncitizens under this administration.
Our nation’s history is complicated, and the pursuit of justice has often been a long and arduous journey. But it was precisely the promise of justice and equality that drew so many to the shores of the United States.
The current crackdown on our nation’s immigration system and the targeting of noncitizens through extreme enforcement measures stands in stark contrast to the values we honor on the Fourth of July. The government’s relentless focus on deportation, family separation, and the erosion of asylum protections does not reflect the spirit of liberty and equality that the Founding Fathers envisioned.
On this Fourth of July, we honor the founding principles of our country, but also confront the disparity between those principles and the current realities faced by our immigrant communities. The struggle for justice is far from over. As we celebrate the freedoms that make this country unique, we must also remember that true freedom is not reserved for only some of us. The ideals of liberty, justice, and equality cannot be selective, and they must be defended for everyone who calls this country home.
Our nation’s true strength lies in its diversity, and it is through our collective commitment to the principles of liberty and justice that we can build a future worthy of the ideals we celebrate today.
