Department of Homeland Security Extends Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaragua and Honduras

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Jeh Johnson has determined that the conditions that warranted the designation of Nicaragua and Honduras for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in 1998 – i.e., Hurricane Mitch – continue to exist and that because of these conditions, these two countries remain unable, temporarily to adequately handle the return of their nationals. In light of this, the Secretary has announced the extension of TPS for both Nicaragua and Honduras.

Secretary Johnson has extended the TPS designation for Nicaragua and Honduras for a period of 18 months beginning January 6, 2015 and extending through July 5, 2016. Individuals previously granted TPS and who continue to meet the eligibility requirements for TPS may re-register during the 60-day period between October 16, 2014 and December 15, 2014 and receive an automatic extension of their Employment Authorization through July 5, 2016.
