Biography
Kayla Choun is an Associate at Kolko & Casey, P.C., where she specializes in the field of U.S. Immigration Law. Kayla is licensed to practice law in the state of Colorado, and authorized to practice federal immigration law throughout the United States.
Kayla was born and raised in the Denver Metro area. She is excited to continue her work in immigration law for Kolko and Casey and to serve clients in the community she calls home. Kayla received her Bachelor of Arts from Lake Forest College in Illinois, majoring in economics and political science and graduating magna cum laude. In college, Kayla was a consumer protection intern at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Chicago for two years, and then studied abroad at the University of Botswana, in Gaborone. Kayla then volunteered with the nonprofit "Bike and Build,” raising money for affordable housing by cycling 4,000-miles across the U.S., working at various build sites en route.
After her undergraduate degree, Kayla spent the next two+ years serving in the Peace Corps in Benin, West Africa. In Benin, Kayla worked on community economic development projects for a local non-profit in Ouassa-Pehunco, Atacora, Benin. Thereafter, Kayla received her Master of Science in Human Rights and Politics from the London School of Economics. She drew upon her experience working in the Peace Corps to complete her dissertation on “Intimate Relationships in Beninese Schools: Evaluating Female Students' and Male Teachers' Experiences.”
Kayla returned to Colorado to attend law school at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law under a full-tuition Chancellor's Scholarship. After her first year, Kayla interned for Justice Melissa Hart at the Colorado Supreme Court. During her second year, Kayla worked as a student attorney at DU's Immigration Law and Policy Clinic, primarily serving detained clients in bond proceedings. In her third year, Kayla interned at the Meyer Law Office, PC, completing projects in various fields, including criminal law, family-based applications for immigration benefits, and further work in removal defense. Kayla received her Juris Doctorate with the Public-Good Distinction in May of 2023, and she is admitted to practice law in Colorado.
Kayla continues to volunteer with West African refugees in the Denver area, primarily assisting with French translation and tutoring. She also enjoys hiking, completing various thru-hikes, including the 2,600-mile Pacific Crest Trail.
