DHS Extends and Redesignates Syria for Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Jeh Johnson has determined that the ongoing armed conflict and other extraordinary and temporary conditions in Syria prevent nationals of those countries from returning to these states in safety. In light of this, the Secretary has announced the both the extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syria.
Extension of TPS Designation for Syria
Secretary Johnson has extended the TPS designation for Syria for a period of 18 months, beginning April 1, 2015 and extending through September 30, 2016. Syrian nationals previously granted TPS and who continue to meet the eligibility requirements for TPS may re-register during the 60-day period between January 5, 2015 and March 6, 2015 and receive an extension of their Employment Authorization through September 30, 2016. Additionally, the employment authorization for Syrian nationals previously granted TPS is automatically extended through September 30, 2015.
Redesignation of Syria for TPS
The DHS Secretary has also redesignated Syria for TPS for a period of 18 months beginning on April 1, 2015 through September 30, 2016. Syrian nationals temporarily residing in the United States who do not currently have TPS or a pending TPS application under a prior TPS designation, who meet the basic eligibility requirements for TPS, and who have continuously resided in the United States since January 5, 2015 may submit an initial application for TPS and Employment Authorization during the initial registration period between January 5, 2015 and July 6, 2015.
